Emergency Response in the UK
We respond to hundreds of emergencies in the UK every year and are included
in local authority emergency plans for every county. We have a special
role to play supporting the emergency services in their response to humanitarian
crises.
>> In 2001 we dealt with 1,328 fire victim support callouts
First Aid
We train almost 100,000 first aiders every year, preparing them to cope
with emergencies at work, in the home or in the event of a major incident.
We also provide first aid teams for public events both large and small.
>> In 2001 we provided first aid cover at 17,802 events
Short term support for Independent Living
We help vulnerable people in the UK regain their independence following
a personal crisis such as a spell in hospital. We complement the work
of the NHS and social services by providing wheelchairs and medical equipment
on loan. We help people make essential journeys and assist people at home
while they recover from an illness or operation.
>> In 2001 we made 214,185 loans of medical equipment
International Tracing & Message services
Working through our international network, we also restore family links
of anyone separated by war or disaster. On average we reunite two families
every day.
>> In 2002, we traced 494 individuals, and handled 1671 Red Cross
Messages from 45 different countries around the world
Refugee services
We provide practical and emotional assistance to vulnerable refugees and
asylum seekers arriving in the UK.
International Relief and Development
We respond rapidly to disasters and conflicts around the world. We are
also committed to longer term development and help other Red Cross and
Red Crescent societies build their capacity to deal with emergencies in
their own countries.
